So this is it...

It's has been a couple of stressful weeks since my last article here on the blog. First we got through a two match weekend with a 3-0 win against Frederiksberg(now 6-5) last Sunday, and the next day we hosted Gentofte(now 3-8) also resulting in a 3-0 win bringing us to a 9-2 record at Christmas break.

Both matches was won with great disciplin from the girls, making very few error and thereby forcing the opponents to make their own points, which was something we knew both opponents had been struggling with in prior matches.
Kristen played libero in both matches while we have been working hard to get Jeanette ready for the cup semifinal match against Skovbakken(now 3-8). Kristen did a very good job stabilising our passing that had been up and down since Jeanette got hurt.

A successful half season..? all comes down to one match!

It is a very special feeling I am experiencing having my first season with a team that are favorits everytime we play.
When the season started we all knew what potential this team had with the number of fantastic players running down the teamsheet. But we also knew it would take some time to build the "team" in the team and make these players perform well together under pressure.
Looking back now we have arrived at Christmas and we have had a season counting a 9-2 record in the league putting us in 2nd only having lost to number 1 Holte(now 11-0). We lost a close 5game match against the Nordic Championship favorits Somero sending us out of that tournament but leaving with a feeling that we can compete with the best team in Scandinavia. Finally we are 3-0 in the cup tournament bringing us to the semifinal.

All in a a very good 1st half of the season and eventhough we would have loved to be undefeated a 13-3 record is by far acceptable at this point. However, it is a funny world coaching a favorit team like Fortuna who is expected to get medals and preferably gold. We played our cup semifinal tonight and that would determin weither or not our first half of the season is a success or a fiasko. When you only count medals it doesn't matter that a team is 11-0 like Holte or 3-8 like Skovbakken. They are both in the semifinals in the cup and have a chance to play for medals and that is exactly our focus in Fortuna right now... We urge to beat Holte at some point in this season and there is not a better time to do it than when you play for the medals.

But first we had a match today against Skovbakken in our way to get to the final. Let me start by saying that we won the match 3-0 in 55 min. and the girls played some of the most errorless and disciplined volleyball I have seen all season. We expected a tough serving Skovbakken team but our passers just kept making great options for Dorthe who had a great day deviding our hitter as she wanted.
Jeanette's leg was tested before the match and we decided to play her and she played a super match making it a sad day for the Skovbakken servers.
Our own servers made a ton of aces leaving Skovbakken unable to find answers to turn arround the match. Katherine and Caley won almost everything they touched and also Kristen did hers to a very strong team-performance.
Juliane played her best match on middle so far this season getting the MVP title and her connection with Dorthe really picked up tonight. And just like last time we played Skovbakken Lotte managed to completely close down any attempts from their starmiddle Ivana Babic who got 1 kill in the match.

So the win brings us to the cup final played on January 24th and it was a big relief for us all.
Personally I felt a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Now we are playing for medals and this is a new chance for us and trust me WE WILL GO FOR IT.

The girls now have a few easy practises left this week before everyone leaves for Christmas break. 2 practises between Christmas and New years and the we start again on January 4th and have our first match in 2010 on the 9th against ASV(now 1-10).

I wanna send a thank you to all the girls for a hard fight the past 4-5 months. We are working hard every day and we are going somewhere that is the dream of every single person on this team... THE FINALS!

Busy week is over, taking us to a 7-2 record

First of all I have to apologize for the lack of info in my blog this past week. It has been very busy for the team with 3 matches and that has taken most of my time.

Secondly I am sorry for the missing recaps of our matches on the clubs webpage. They have all been written and also posted. But something is wrong with the browser on our webpage so we can't post new articles. I hope it will be fixed soon...

The 3 matches...

My last article was about the big match we were going to play against Holte(now 9-0). The match was not a very pretty one, but what it lacked in beauty it had in drama and intensity.
We got off to an awfull start in the first game and never recovered. We couldn't pass the tough Holte serves, and at the same time we had no power in our own attacks.
Things got much better through the rest of the match though. We managed to pick up our level in passing and we got way more energy both on outside and middle offense. 2nd game goes our way and that made the match tied again.

3rd game we keep the momentum going throughout most of the game, and we had a game point at 24-23 but the ball was hit out and Holte ends up taking the game 27-25. A hard loss in a game where we had Holte under pressure in their sideout and blocked them really well to make points in our own serv.

4th game starts off awfull and it seems like the match is our and that the loss in 3rd game had gotten the best of us. But down with 9 points the girls followed the lead of Caley Carter who took charge and demanded more from everyone, showing the way herself by killing balls and playing some great defence. We reach Holte at 19-20, but we finish the match with 3 serving errors and that was costfull. We lost the 4th game 25-23 and thereby the match.

All in all we did a lot of things right against a team that is on a winningstreak which makes them that much harder to beat. Statisticly we should have won the match, more effective in passing, blocking and hitting, but when it mattered Holte was just the better team. They knew how to make the points that mattered and that made the difference.

Midweek we had a match against gentofte(now 2-6) and we showed up without Jeanette(L) who got a leg injury at mondays practise, and Lotte(MH)who was ill.
A mentally tough match Wednesday evening and we never really showed up in that match. We won it 3-0 but 1st and 3rd game could have gone both ways. We had problems in passing but mostly it seemed like the girls just knew when to turn up the level just enough to catch Gentofte's lead and win the match.

Yesterday we had the 3rd match in just 7 days. Brøndby(now 6-3) were coming to town and we knew it would be a tough match. Brøndby has a new team after having signed 3 new American players and the Danish national team setter.
They came firing from all angles and our passing was again missing Jeanette and that gave us a lot of problems. With the bad passing we couldn't get any rhythm in offense and we lost the first game with 9 points I think.

Coming out to the 2nd game we swapped Caley to outside and Kristen to rightside and that helped our offense, but passing was still not working at all and Brøndby were just killing every ball they tuched. We lose the game by 2 points and were now down 2-0 i games and had at no point found answers to break the Brøndby defence and serves.

3rd game we decided to have Caley, Katherine and Kristen passing in all possible rotations and that helped a lot. The girls stepped up and at the same time our own serves got way better. We got off to an 8 point lead and even though Brøndby came a bit closer at the end due to 3 serving errors the win in the 3rd game were never really in danger.

4th game and we felt we had some momentum to build on. But midway we started to hit the balls out again both easy and hard ones, and that gave Brøndby the lead... A timeout, a little bit of yelling and then we were back on track taking the match to 5th game. Julie(OH) came in to serv and gave us 2 aces to help the proces along.

5th game and we had talked about holding on to momentum coming from 0-2 to 2-2 in games. We wanted to force Brøndby to make their own points and just fight for every single ball and so we did... The girls changed sides at 8-6, 9-6 but then Brøndby faught their way back in it. In the end it all came down to the big players on both sides to make big plays, and in that specific catagory we were the better team on the day. Caley and Katherine are just amazing players in those situations. Caley did it in the 3rd game and Katherine took the show in the 5th with 3 single block kills at the end to give us a 15-12 win and that was the match.

To be honest there are many reason why we should have lost that match. Brøndby really played well and was the better team in the match, but on a day where nothing was working optimal we found our way back. Mille(L) who was subbing for Jeanette played some amazing defence when it really mattered and that gave us more chances in transition than earlier in the match. Dorthe(S) did the simple things after the first 2 games where we tried to run many new things, and she found the players that made the points for us at the right time. Juliane and Lotte stayed in it though we were unable to set them a lot, and they made so many important blocks and serves. And Kristen who didn't have one of her best days came through in the end with 2 kills, 1 block and one very amazing defencive play in the 5th game.

The way we as a team pulled through today and the way Katherine and Caley has taken the lead in the Holte match and in this one, I feel very confident we are on our way to a good season. We must be doing a lot of things right during the week for the girls to pull out a team performance like today. And NO it was not pretty today, and NO we have no player that can fill out the shoes of the teams smallest player, Jeanette, but we have a lot of good players who all have different qualities, and when we as coaches manage to put the girls in situations where each player gets a chance to help the team with what she is best at, we are a hard team to beat and we will get stronger with every step we take, getting to know eachother more and more. We have 5 new players in our starting 7 comparing to last season, so to be where we are now is pretty impressive to me.

Coming up is the a double match this next weekend where we play Frederiksberg(now 5-4) Sunday and Gentofte(now 2-6) on Monday, leaving only the Cup semifinal to be played on December 14th angainst Skovbakken(now 2-6) before we leave for Christmas break.

Another win and now the big Riot..

We won our match this Friday against Lyngby(now 2-5) which were our 6th straight win against Danish teams and again the score was 3-0 in games.

We managed to bring our high level of serving which instantly put Lyngby's side-out under pressure. Our hitters came out with great numbers in the end, and Caley got away with the MVP for the match. She played a very solid and killed 2/3 of all the sets she got. But also Kristen played her best match yet in offence making no errors on 18 sets and killing half of them.

Our passers did we descent performance, but we struggled a bit a few times. The girls however, kept coming back giving Dorthe great time and many opportunities to make the set she wanted to.
We finaly played a match where we converted transition very well and that always kept us tied or more against a wellplaying Lyngby Team. Midway through each game we found a serving streak or two to give us the lead. Katherine and Caley both had some great runs in their serves, and also Juliane who tried a new serv was doing very well.

Rematch...!

Coming weekend we are going on the road playing the league's number 1 Holte(now 7-0) who yet have to lose their first game. We played them in the 1st round in a match where we never found our own level, and Holte kept us away from involving our middles.

We hope to be the first team to break their winning streak and even though it will be a tough match, I feel we are better prepared to bring the type of volleyball we want to. We've had more time to find the "TEAM" on our team, and the girls are getting more comfortable on court.

The match will very much be decided on which team wins the serve/pass match-up, but even if we succeed in serving well, there will still be a lot of transition points to play for, and with the hard work we have put into defence since we played them last, we should put up a better fight for the win.

All in all I expect us to give them a fight for their money, and if we play well as a team opening the door for individuals to shine, I feel we have a bigger string of pointmakers than they do and that could give us the edge we need to win it. But is starts and ends with TEAM and we lacked that in the first match against them.

Keeping the winning streak alive...

We haven't lost to a Danish team since the first round loss against Holte(now 6-0) and in the first match after our Nordic Championship weekend, I knew it was going to be a lot about the mental aspect of the game that needed attention to keep the streak of wins alive.

We were facing Skovbakken(now 0-6) at home, and eventhough it was a team without wins in the league, all games they have lost has been close and they came with a fresh win against Lyngby(now 2-4) in the Cup tournament quaterfinals.

So we expected an opponent with confidens after advancing to the Cup semifinals and we know Skovbakken as a tough serving and blocking team. They have one of the big profiles of the entire league, Ivana Babic(MB) so we knew we had to put focus on her.

1st game starts off a bit shacky... We make 4 serving errors in the first 6 tries and Skovbakken gave us a fight for our money in our side-out. However, we overcome over slow start, get a few servingstreaks going and take home a not wellplayed game 25-23 after a good Skovbakken comeback near the end. Katherine Whitney(OH) was our big pointscorer in this game.

2nd game began a lot better for us playingwise. Kristen Karlik(RS) came on court for Eva Vennekilde(RS) to help out our passing and defense. We connected better over the middle with Lotte Hauge(MB) as the big player and also Caley "The Rocket" Carter(OH) picked up her killing percentage in this game. We play consitantly throughout the game and keep Skovbakken from the long servingstreaks they had had in the 1st game. 25-16 was the end score.

3rd game and the line-up was the same as in the 2nd game. We get an early lead of 4-5 points and halfway through the game our young talent Lise Lindø(RS) got a chance to feel the court. She did what she had to, killed 1 ball, lost 1 ball, got 1 block kill and an assisted blockkill.
At the end of the 3rd game we have a 23-18 lead and a good line at the net. But a lost ball over the middle on a perfect pass and after that 2 bad passes made the score 23-21 and forced us to a timeout.
We had a talk about right and wrong solutions and after that 2 sets to Katherine going over their short lineblock made it 25-21.

MVP for our team was Lotte Hauge(MB) who completely closed down Ivana Babic(MB) from Skovbakken, but also Katherine(OH) had a great game with .750 killing stat over 3 games(AMAZING) and Caley(OH) with a .400 killing stat. The fact that our 2 outside hitters are playing with those numbers is a contribute to our middles too. They have gotten so much better during the season, and the connection with Dorthe(S) has proved to be one of our strengths on the team. And when middles are that dangerous, Katherine and Caley get better conditions which they take full advantage of.

Finding the balance and the Cup semifinals coming up...

Playing a team like Skovbakken who we will play again in the Cup semifinal, it is so important that our team finds the balance between trying the fun but riskful plays and "moving the chains" as the say in football.
Skovbakken have some very good servers and any sideout we can get in first try we should take. Against a team like that you just never know when they will pull out 5-6 great serves and before you know it you are down by that much or the game is tied again and you just lost a big lead.
In this weekends match we didn't find the best way of getting out of tough situations. We try difficult stuff in a line-up where they have our passers under pressure, and it is just a question of the opposing team being a bit more efficient than Skovbakken was this Saturday before we lose a game instead of winning it. That will be something we will focus on this week and the week after too. What makes Manning, Brady etc. so good as team leaders.. They know when to "move the chains" and when to show off.. and we have to do the same in volleyball.

That's all for now, coming up this Friday is a match against my old team from Lyngby(now 2-4). It will be a fun match to play and I am sure both sides will be extra excited to win this one. Lyngby has a strong team of players who can't but volleyball as number 1 priority, but still has the level to beat the best. We have to be on our toes, keeping our tempo in offense and putting pressure in our serves.

So much good and still not enough...

After a tough week we just got back home from Finland and the 1st round of the N.C.C.

Let me say right away that we lost the final match against the home team Somero with 3-2. And due to a bad ball score, we finish last of the runner-ups and are therefore out of the tournament.

Sitting back with a lot of disapointment and thinking about how we could have done it differently, and I realize that there is nothing we could have changed. On paper we have an amazing team, and every day at practise we work to become better as a team, but to expect my players to beat a Finish top team is not really fair.
I do believe we have the level when things are floating, but under pressure we still struggle to find answers in passing and thereby offense.

On Saturday we won against Lindesberg from Sweden who has Crystal Barnes as a middle and none less than Marcie Hampton as outside. That win was amazing! We were all over them in the block, and our serves made it hard on their talented setter.

The win gave us a lot of confidens, but we failed to stay at that level in the match Sunday. The Finish team came with tough serving and we simply could not get stability in passing, and Dorthe was struggling to get our middles involved. We lost 25-13 after an 8-2 lead in the first game, and that says it all.

A 25-20 win in the second game didn't change matters a whole lot. We were still having trust issues in passing and defense, but Somero started making more errors too.

25-13 in third game and again we completely fell apart in our side-out.

The fourth game we finally found som answers, and a 23-15 lead ended with a 25-22 win. But the lost points in 1st and 3rd game, and the big lead we gave up in the 4th left us with only one thing to do to promote to the finals... Win the 5th game.

We started out awfull and never recovered. 1-6 was the score after we lead out with a side-out to make it 1-0 and then a serving error.
We changed sides at 4-8 and then got aces 2 times. It enden 15-7 and we finshed a 3-2 loss plus a 3-0 win with a ball score of -1.

A sad way to end a elseway perfect weekend with team bonding, team meeting etc., but in a tournament like this, you just can't give away games with a 10+ margin. We had plus 23 from our first match and still couldn't stay in it..

I am however, proud of the girls and the way they faught their way back in the match today. We have a lot of work to be done before we can call ourselves a team, but everyone is willing to do the work, and there are still a lot of matches to be played this season, with the Cup semifinal coming up in december, and 4 important league matches in November.

I am sorry that I am not able to bring news of victories, but I can promise you that the girls gave everything they had and on a different day things would have turned out our way.

4 matches in 1 week... Off to a good start

After a week where there has been no matches due to the National Team Nordic Championship, we now face a week with 4 matches of which 3 will be due or die..

We began this week with a match in Århus against ASV(now 1-4) and the plan was simple from the start... We needed to perform well, execute fast and sparing some of the starters if possible.

The match got off to a perfect start with good serves and a steady side-out. ASV had a lot of problems finding answers to our speed in offense which gave our outsides 1 on 1 in the block a lot of the time.
1st game ends 25-11 in our favour.

2nd game and the picture was the same. We dominated ASV in all aspects and even though they faught well for every ball, the difference in level was too big.
Score in the 2nd game was 25-11.

3rd game and time to seal the deal. We always talk a lot about staying focussed during the games, but somehow 3rd game being up 2-0 is always a hard one.... but not today.
The girls performed close to perfection and they never gave ASV a chance to bring their middles into play.
Score was - believe it or not, 25-11...:0)

A victory 3 times 25-11 bringing us to a 3-1 division score, and we got to spare Kristen, Caley and Juliane who all stood out the whole match. I could not have asked for a better scenario even in my dreams.!
Julie(OH) played her first full match for the team and so did Jane(MB). They both showed the level needed, and fully lived up to my expectations. And as a coach it is nice to test your squad depth.

Quaterfinal coming up in the Cup tournament..

We are back in action already Tuesday playing KSV(now 3-2 in the league below us). The match is played 7.30 PM in Copenhagen and any match on a weekly day is always wierd. Most players on the teams are working a regular job before they play volleyball, so many things during a day can influence how each player is motivated for the match, so a big task is at hand for us coaches to make sure the team is ready - physically and mentally!
On Tuesday we are back to our normal starting line-up, eventhough the team performed well this Saturday, the Cup is just too important to take any chances.
KSV is a team fighting hard in defense and they played in the best league last year. We need to bring our very best to ensure a comfortable win, which is what we are going for.

Nordic Club Championship around the corner...

Friday we leave for Finland to play the 1st round in the N.C.C. and it is one of our season goals to promote to the final round. To reach that goal we need to win both matches in Finland, and there is no doubt that we will have a battle at hand. Generally the teams in Sweden and Finland are at a higher level than the Danish teams, but the last couple of years we have seen the Danish teams competing to the fullest with the rest of Scandinavia.

We play Saturday and Sunday but before that we have a chance to watch our opponents in action on Friday where they open the tournament. This will be the 2nd N.C.C. for me personally, and last year my team was there to learn, this year we are here to win.
I expect to be facing higher blocks, faster offense and tougher serving, but I also believe that we can bring the same to the table. I don't think we have seen our own full potential yet, and what better ocation that the N.C.C..?

All players are fit to play coming in to this week, and our focus at practise should bring everyone whos been out, up to speed. Dorthe(S) is playing the best I have seen from her side, and Jeanette(L) is showing more and more confidense both in passing and defense.

That's all for now, next time I write I hope to write about wins in the N.C.C.. We are bringing a smaller team(11 players and 2 coaches) so we will probably be outnumbered, "but better to bring 5 lions than 500 Sheep"

Week 3 and we are still improving

3rd game of the season was played this Saturday, and facing us were Frederiksberg(now 2-1) who is expected to be a contender for the final 4 in the league.

We came in to the match feeling confident after last weeks win against Broendby(now 1-1). Expecting our block/defense to stay as disciplined as last week, we have had focus on offense rhythm during this weeks practise, and it was a goal for us to be effective in transition - converting our defensive digs in to points would be a game deciding part of this match.

Frederiksberg is know for good serves and solid blocking, so a bit of pressure on our passers to step up and play big.... and so they did!

1st game got off a bit slow for us, where we served without pressure and lacked discipline in our blocks and that kept the game close all the way to the mid of the game. Our sideout worked very well and that was why we were able to stay with them. In the end of the game we stepped up in serving and made a point in every of our last 4 serves which gave us a 25-19 win.

Before the 2nd game we talked about our blocks and how we needed to adjust, and on top of that we wanted to stay focussed on keeping momentum from the end of the 1st game.
The girls went on court and executed to perfection giving up only 13 points in the entire game. We served with way more pressure which kept their middles from getting involved, and our passers led by our libero Jeanette passed perfectly which gave Dorthe(S) super conditions and in the 2nd game she set the middles 50% of the times and they responded by winning 70% in this game.
The game ends 25-13.

3rd game and time to close the match. Mentally always a tough game with 2-0 lead, but the girls again showed their potential and served/blocked Frederiksberg out of the gym. Right from the beginning of the 3rd game we played disciplined and organized. We took chances in our serve and were successful and the game and thereby the match ended with a 25-11 win.

Kristen played rightside in this game with an injured thigh, nonetheless, she played a super match with several good digs, she picked up her blocking after a slow start and finished off the 3rd game with 3 straight kills.
Our leftside hitters got 65% of all sets in the match, and both Katherine(OH) and Caley(OH) finished the match with a 65% kill rate.
Middleblockers Juliane and Lotte finshed the match with a 50% kill rate and with ratings like that there is no way we could have lost that match. Superb setting by Dorthe especially in the 2nd and 3rd game, and our offense is looking stronger and stronger by the day.
MVP was Katherine who played her best match so far for the team, but several players got votes and that clearly signaled that it was a teamperformance this Saturday.

I have installed a link to the standing on the left side of the blog under "links" and there you can follow the standings in the Danish elitedivision.

First 2 matches, Obama and the refs...

First of all sorry for the lack of updates this past week. With the season opener and a lot going on in the club at the same time, I had a hard time getting to the keyboard..

We lost last weeks opener against the reigning champions who proved to be way further in their cooperation, communication and rhythm than we were. At the same time the players looked tense and uncomfortable on the court, so it did not take Holte IF(now 2-0) long to break down our sideout and thereby basically winning the match very easy 3-0.
A huge disappointment for me and the players since we felt ready to perform and we were prepared for what Holte were bringing to the table. But failing to execute our chances along side an unbalanced block/defence, really left us with very little chance in that match.

Second match of the season and again against one of the contenders for the titel this year. BrøndbyVolley(now 1-1) who finished 4th last year after a dramatic loss in the semifinals against our team Fortuna-Odense(now 1-1), is coming in to the new season with a lot of changes to their squad. No less than 4 new foreigners are what they have signed, and we were of course very excited to go up against them all…

After last weekends loss in the season opener in a match far from the level we know we are able to produce, we have spend all week with full focus on our block/defence and converting digs into points.
So coming into the match this Saturday, we had full focus on our own side of the net and our preparations had been 100% about ourselves as a team, and not about our opponents.

We took charge very early in the 1st game and scored 11 points in the first 6 rotations. And the result of our full week of focussing on block/defence was dominating the picture completely. We still were struggling with our rhythm in offense, but our hitters today chose to “take the bone in the other hand” and were all tooling at a high level.
We win 1st game comfortably 25-22.

2nd game starts off best for Brøndby, but we quickly get back on track from the 1st game, and once we found our rhythm it seemed like they had a hard time finding answers to get us out of our comfort zone. Making points in every serve for 6 rotations gave us a solid lead, and a serving streak from first Katherine(OH) and later Caley(OH) gave us a very safe win 25-13.
Dorthe(S) who in the late 1st game was starting to get the middles very much involved, were now playing very comfortably all round. And with the good passing we provided she was setting very solid throughout the game.

Being up 2-0 the 3rd game is usually a tough one and today was no exception. Brøndby came with more spirit and will having their backs against the wall, and we were struggling a bit in the early game. However with a few streaks in first Juliane’s(MB) and then Dorthe’s(S) serve gave us a 5 point lead. Up about 21-16 it was time to close the game and thereby the match, we ran in to 3 serving errors in a row and before we knew it Brøndby had a gamepoint at 24-23. In this part of the match the ref. decided to bring 4 completely wrong calls to the table leaving both sides of the net in extreme frustration, but we kept our cool and closed the match 27-25 where Kristen(S) came in and made 2 digs and 2 blocks in the last 7 balls of the game setting up our win.

Obama and the pack in Copenhagen

As many of you probably know, U.S. president Obama was in Copenhagen hoping to influence the IOC voters to vote for Chicago as Olympic city 2016. Success or not I’ll let you decide, but for us his visit was very exciting indeed. 2 members of his wolf pack decided to stay behind and came to our match in Brøndby. For security reason I can’t give out their names ;0) but in terms of motivation, having them on the sideline this Saturday along side my mom, really gave that extra which we needed, and I can’t thank them enough for finding time in their busy program to stop by. And to Mr. Obama I can only say from my heart “… I’ll never forget him THE LEADER OF THE PACK” :0)

A new line on technique or maybe not…!

I have to admit I was one of the people who was very excited about the refs announcing to ease up on the technical demand on our players, I have always wanted the game to be decided by the players and not the ref., but has it really changed?
What we saw in our match against Holte a week ago the demands had evidently changed, and after that match I told myself to expect that from now on.
This weekends match against Brøndby however, was a different story. The match began as the last one where EVERYTHING was allowed, but the from mid of the 2nd game the ref decided to change his line by making a very bad double call on our setter, and from then on he literally called everything remotely close to a lift or a double. After the match I wanted to talk to him about it, but I decided not to cuz at the end of the day the line proves to be as it has been always – very much depending on who the ref is and how he feels in the particular moment. Now I am not saying all refs are not consistent, some are consistently hard on technique and some are loose, but degree of confusement is high.

What is the new line if there is one and what can we as coaches and players expect?

I really hope the refs talk more this year than what has been the case other years, cuz if we are trying to find a new line closer to the international line, then it should be consistent from ref. to ref. and it should be published so everyone knows what to expect.

That is all for now, next weekend we are playing FrederiksbergVolley(now 1-0) at home and I look very much forward seeing my good friend William who is coaching the Frederiksberg team.

Time to convert

Last fase of pre-season and the Cup match

Moving in to the last fase of our pre-season program I feel confident that we are where we are suppose to be each player indivisually, but I am still worried that we have a very long ways to go as a team.
On court we still struggle with the organization in block/defence and the rythme in offense still needs a lot of work.

Off the court I am very proud of the girls and the hard work they put in to becoming a team. A few players are still finding their "role" on the team, and for the many young players it is that much more important to find their role and what they can contribute with for the team.

Leaving for France...

Wednesday evening we leave for France to play our last tournament before season starts. Being away together should be a good experience for the players, and there will be plenty of time to due teamwork and player-coach talks.
We have been placed in a group with a Belgian, a French and a Swiss team, and it will be exciting to compare our current level against theese more experienced teams.

I'm expecting the team to stick together in the tough matches we will undoubtably be in, and once we get comfortable I want to see them go for each point. We proved that we can play at a very high level against Hamburg, taking a game off them, and the teams in this tournament will be arround that level, so the chances to get a game or two are deffinently there.

Cup match in Aalborg

Before we leave for France we are playing our 1st round in the Cup tournament. We play tuesday evening in Aalborg, and a big bonus for me this year is that living in Odensen only puts Aalborg 2.5 hours away.. :0)

Aalborg used to be a top4 team in Denmark, but over the last 3 years the lost a lot/all their main players, and has chosen to start over with a young team in the 2nd best leaque. The are always a very good home team, and without knowing much about their players, I expect a tough match since it will be our first against a Danish team. Focus will from us be on keeping errors to a minimum and get a good rythme in our offense.
It is a match we should win comfortably, but in the days where Tennis tour is at hte US Open let me say this; "with too many unforced errors, a junior player can beat you"

I am excited to get started on this busy week, it should be a good one..

Trip to Holland and a visit from Hamburg

Spending 2 months in the States working with volleyball I was looking forward to a calm yet exciting start on the Danish season, with a new team and in a new club. However, once you're in town and at practise with a lot of girls who're all there to get better, you quickly realize that taking it slow wont get you anywhere.

This article is a small view into the last week or so, which has been full of new experiences with both womens AND mens volleyball.

On tour with Bring it...

I arrived in Odense Sunday and started practise on Monday and everything was going according to plan - until Wednesday arround 22.00. I recieved a call from Martin Olafsen who is the headcoach of Örkelljunga mens team in Sweden. Martin was in Holland with the "Bring it" exposure tour for men, and they where in bad need for a coach to help running practises and matches for 30 hopefull players all looking for try outs with a team in Europe.
It didn't take me long to decide that I wanted to go. I felt it would be a great chance to further develope as a coach, but also the fact that Martin called me for because they needed extra hands.

I drove all night and arrived in Holland Thursday at 12.00 or so and the 30 guys just finished their morning practise. Martin and the Bring it agent Jonathan Walsh chose 12 players of the 30 to play a match the same evening and 1 hour later they took off heading for Belgium. That left me back with close to 20 players which I had to run a practise for in the evening, so I had a few hours to get settled at the hostel and had smaller chats with some of the guys.

over the next 4 days we ran practise every morning and evening, and every day 12 guys where given the chance at a match to show that they where the ones to be given a try out next time one came up. I got to coach 1 match while I was there, and it was against the U21 Dutch team. That whole experience was just fantastic. Being in charge of a hungry group of guys, playing against some of the biggest talents in Holland was just a great opportunity, and I want to thank both Marting and Jonathan for inviting me there.

All in all it was a group of super motivated guys who all wanted a great experience and dreamed of getting signed with a team in Europe.
Coaching these guys where not a difficult task since they where all looking for ANY advise I could give to get them that step closer to a try out. And eventhough there is a difference between coaching women and men, the level of engagement from the players made me want to give out tips left and right, and to stay after practise to run one or two more drills.

Being with the tour and seeing the amount of players who are looking for a job, really puts in perspektive how many many many players are out there looking for a team to play for, and it makes you think if we in Denmark actually get out enough to see what is out there..!
I know that Jens Bang has been in Slovenia this summer to watch the womens exposure tour, and Jens found 2 players he felt would make his team better. But comparing to other years, being at the tour really gave Jens a chance to see what different type of players there where, and that fact makes me sure that the 2 new players in Brøndby are exactly what they need.
After my trip to Holland I have decided that I want to do that extra work every season to go see the tour or start having players for try out before signing them. It gives you a way better idea of what you can get and what you are missing out on by not doing it.

Hamburg in Odense - a lesson to be learned...

During my trip in Holland I have to admit I felt I was missing out on my own teams pre-season, so I was very excited to get back and get started for real.
This Friday came our first real test, and it was against none less that number 4 in Germany, VT Aurubis Hamburg. We played 10 games(sæt) against them and we averaged 13 points in each game. Hamburg playes volleyball about 15 centimeters higher above the net than what we see in Denmark, so we got what we asked for.. ;0)
They simply hit harder and higher, serve tougher and play faster than we do, so it came as no surprise to us that we were struggling with the Hamburg team.
On top of that we played without Juliane, Julie, Saori and Jeanette due to injuries/beachvolley, so when we are going to Hamburg next weekend for a rematch, we expect to bring a full team and thereby more a taste of what our level really is.

Playing games against teams at that level gives the players a great chance to see how good they can get with more practise and physical improvement, and I personally think it is the best possible preparation for the up-coming season because we get to play so many games at a higher tempo, and it demands so much more of us all compared to the matches we play in the Danish league.

Looking at our own side of the net, passing against Hamburg's serves was very hard, but we did better as each game was played, and it was also obvious that we need better timing between Dorthe and our middle players. I am proud of the way my players handled the games, they kept a high spirit all the time and where actually looking like a team, communicating all the time, helping eachother out and smiling a lot... All while they where trying their hardest to compete with Hamburg.

We are very excited to go there the coming Friday, and I look forward to see our further progress in our level of game.

Fortuna 2009/2010 Squad presentation

First of all let me just say that I from now on will be writing my volleyball comments in English. The fact that my girlfriend and several of the players on my team can't read Danish and the coaches and families in the States who has sent their players to Denmark will now also have a chance to follow our season.

It is time to present the squard for the season 2009/2010 in Fortuna. At this moment the squad is 17 players deep, and the following 2 weeks or so will be spend on cutting it down to 14. 12 players in the match squad and 2 spots for talents.

Setters:
- Dorthe Windeleff is with her many years of elite volleyball and national team experience the obvious 1. setter on our team. I feel extremly blessed as a 27 year old coach to have had the chance to work with 2 of the best setters in Denmark. Dorthe is one of those setters, and I am excited to see what she can bring the team.
Dorthe is a transfer from DHG.

- Sophie Jørgensen is our young talent on the setter position. Sophie comes from the clubs own youth team and has a promissing future in volleyball. Sophie is to practise with the 1st team but will play the main part of her matches on the clubs 2nd and youth team.

- Saori Mizuno has due to backproblems been forced to cut back on her practise hours this season. She will therefore be playing backup setter and middleblocker, which are the two positions that she is able to play at the moment.
With her high level of integrity and skill she will be a dominating player as middleblocker I am sure, and she is more than competent to step in as setter if needed. Saori has played for the Japanese national team earlier.

Middleblockers:
- Saori Mizuno is one of our aces on this position and I have already talked about her abilities on court.

- Juliane Daugaard played her first full season as an elitedivision player last year and did really well. Her game has developed a lot and she is a sure starter on our national team. If Juliane can keep her momentum going and stay focussed this could be the year where she brakes through as the amazing middle her talent gives promisses of. Working with the 1st setter Dorthe, I feel confident that Juliane will develope her game even more.

- Jane Diederichsen is a transfer from DHG. With her experience from many years of division volleyball she will fully be capable of competing for a starting position as a middleblocker.

- Mie Maimann Møller is another of the young talents on the squad this year. Mie as been called up for national team matches this season, and even though she still has a long way to go, Mie is one of the very promissing middleblockers in the country. Mie will be practising with the 1st team, but will play the main part of her matches for the 2nd and youth team.

Outside hitters:
- Katherine Whitney was MVP last season in both the cup final and was awarded the same titel by the other players in the league as the most valuable player in the elitedivision. Katherine is expected to be a leader on the team this year. With her experience from playing 2 years in Denmark and 1 year in Croatia on top of her many years of volleyball in the States, Katherine will be a very valuable addition to the squad this coming season. Katherine is a tranfer from Holte IF.

- Kristen Karlik is a new American player in Denmark. Kristen played club volleyball and college volleyball with Katherine back in the States. She was a dominating libero in "The Big 12" conferrence in the States when she played, and she played outside hitter in club. Her main forces is obviously her passing and defence, but we are very set to bring back her hitting skills as the season progresses. Kristen is coming to Fortuna after a year and a half break from volleyball due to a back injury.

- Julie Pedersen was on the team last year. She another one of the young players in the squad whos strongest side is her dangerous serving. This year is to make her develop even more as an outside hitter, and with Katherine and Kristen to look up to I feel this is an opportune season to take the next step. Julie will inspite of her young age be in the match squad.

- Emilie Louise Holk has decided to stay in Denmark to study and will therefore also stay on the team. Mille, as she goes by, is one of the most dedicated players in the entire league. She a fantastic player to have as a coach because with Mille you always know what you get, she has been with the team for several years, and everyone that has played Fortuna can tell that she is always good for a point or 2 with her strong serving and superb defence.

Rightside hitters:
- Eva Vennekilde is returning to the team after having given birth to a baby boy. Eva brings back a lot of experience to the team and will be competing for a starting position as the season progresses, but the first step is for her to get comfortable with the game again.

- Lise Lindø is yet another one of the young talents in the squad. Lise has played both outside and middle as a youth player here in Odense, and she looks to take the next step in to becoming one of the next dominating Danish players on the rightside position. Lise will be practising with the 1st team but will play the main part of her matches with the 2nd team.

Libero:
- Jeanette Ellekjær Hansen has returned to Odense after 2 years of not playing volleyball. The whole club is very excited to have Jeanette back who in her prime time was around the national team. With her consistant passing and fast defence, Jeanette will be able to lift this vital part of the team, and she is very dedicated to get back to her former level. However there might be some issues conserning her job, so Jeanette is still not 100% sure she will be able to play.

To complete our squad there is still 1 or 2 signings to be completed, but since these are under progress I will wait with the names for now. All I can say is that with this material, I truely feel that the sky is the limit. We have the foundation to go all the way this year, but it will take a lot of hours in the gym, and we know that the other teams are strong as well.
The team has good ball controllers, experienced and skillful setters, young talents to push themselves and their teammates, valuable experience with the returning players and powerhitters to score points on attack and serving.

To sum it all up - "I want to win gold this season"

I am as coach of this team extremly exited for the season to begin. We will be hosting Hamburg Volleyball Club on august 28th and 29th for a small tournament in Odense.
The weekend after we are going to Hamburg to play them, a Polish team, and Italian team and a French team.
Finally we are going to a tournament in France on september 16th to 20th playing against top teams from all of Europe.
That schould make us ready for the first game of the season which will be against none less that the reigning champions from Holte on september 26th. A match full of internal rivalry and with player transfers both ways over the summer it promisses to be intense.

Fortsat god sommer.. "There is no I in team, but there is more than one T in I am gonna take it to spiketown.."

Nye tider

Hvad angår holdet så er det 90% på plads. Der mangler endeligt svar fra 2 spillere, men det burde være på plads inden jeg 23. juni tager til USA. Hvad der dog er på plads er fortrykket for sæsonen, og vores kampe ser således ud;

Holte 2 x hjemme, 1 x ude
Brøndby 1 x hjemme, 2 x ude
Frederiksberg 2 x hjemme, 1 x ude
Gentofte 1 x hjemme, 2 x ude
ASV 1 x hjemme, 2 x ude
Skovbakken 2 x hjemme, 1 x ude
Lyngby 2 x hjemme, 1 x ude

Rækkefølgen i hvilken vi møder de forskellige hold ser således ud;

Holte(Hjemme), Brøndby(Ude), FRB.(H), Gentofte(U), ASV(U), Skovbakken(H), Lyngby(H).

Tak for 3 gode år

Når det nu med sikkerhed er slut med Lyngby's dame1 i denne omgang for mit vedkommende, så skal der hermed lyde et hjerteligt tak for god ro og orden til alle de mange spillere der har været en del af holdet gennem de 3 år;

Fremtiden i Europa

Hermed mine sidste bud i denne omgang:

Semi: Fortuna vinder 2-1 i kampe over Brøndby.

Semi: Holte slår Skovbakken 2-0 i kampe.

Finale: Holte vinder 2-1 i kampe.

Let the truth be told... and William .. you suck!!

Again my writing will be in English because I am typing it on an American labtop.

We have played 2 games since my last article, and unfortunately we've lost them both. First Holte owned up to being favorits and beat us 3-0. A game where we in short periods showed that we could play with the best, but over 3 sets Holte were far better.

The second one we lost this saturday in Broendby. A close match which - according to volleynet - was close because Broendby didn't play their best. The few people at the game were however, witnessing something different. It was probably one of the best played games this season. I have seen a lot of games and most of the times either one or the other of the teams have played way below the level expected, and made a lot of mistakes.
This game was different. Both teams served well and had very few mistakes. As a coach I would say that 90% of all points in this game was won by the team who gained the point, and not lost by the other team. A lot of long rallies, good blocks and hard hits.. those were the main ingredience in a close riot in Broendby this Saturday.

Broendby won the game at the end because they basicaly just had that bit more energy I think. We lost some momentum when Tine got injuried at 10-9 i 5th, but I wont say that it was determaning for the game. We played our chance and gave everything we had. The girls and I were sad for the loss, but very very pleased with our own performance, and we want to play more of those games this season... Even if we end up losing them all 3-2.

William has taken the lead..

In Williams and mine internal competition, William overtook the lead. The total score before the coming weekend is:

William 25 points

Mini 20 points

There are no excuses for me not being ahead, I just have to pick it up for the last 5 games. And hopefully Frederiksberg will lose a few games against the top3 which should bring me closer in the score.

My thoughts on the coming games...

Skovbakken vs. Frederiksberg
Skovbakken has lost the first 2 games against Frederiksberg, but in the spirit of my competition against William and because of the fact that Skovbakken here have a chance to seal the deal, I'm going to vote for a hometeam victory. Skovbakken are fantastic on their middle, a place where Frederiksberg hava had nothing since Mette O. has been injuried.
Result: 3 - 2

DHG vs. Holte
A game where Holte probably wont throw away their lead in the total standings, so I vote for a sure victory.
Result: 0 - 3

Lyngby vs. Fortuna
We plan to continue our current level of play and are more than willing to pick up a fight against the reigning champions. Fortuna although probably wont be interessted in letting go of their 2nd place, which is all building up to a hell of a match. I will vote for the margins to be on our side this time eventhough we will be missing Tine.
Result: 3 - 1

KSV vs. Brøndby
Nothing in question here. Broendby needs to win this one, and KSV has nothing to play for. On top of that Broendby is the better team.
Result: 0 - 3

Good luck to everyone this coming weekend...

In a few days players from around copenhagen will join together in Lyngby, and they will be launching the largest comeback any team has ever made.
TEAM!! That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We must be united in our common interests. Perhaps it is fate that Sunday is the 22nd of Febuary and we will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression or persecution, but from relegation. We're fighting for our right to stay an elitedivision team. To exist. And should we win the day, the 22nd of Febuary will no longer be known as a regular holiday but as the day when whole of Lyngby declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not relegate without a fight! We're going to stay up! We're going to survive. Sunday we celebrate our JUDGEMENT DAY!!!!!

Excitment in this next round, and when 3 became 2...

First of all, this writing will be in english because I am stuck with an American labtop, and it is missing some of the Danish letters.. :0)

A sad week for our team in Lyngby or a final one some might say. We lost a rather stupid match against Skovbakken, and now have no realistic shot of going to the finals.
7 rounds remaining, and lets take a look at the middle of the league:

4. Skovbakken 14 (with 13 games played)
5. Frederiksberg 14 (with 14 games played)
6. Lyngby 12 (with 14 games played)

Skovbakken is missing a match against DHG, so let's say they win that one, which will bring them to 16 points after 14 games.

Before the season I said 22 points would be enough to advance to the semifinals, and I think it just might.
Suppose top3 wins against bottom 5, there will be 8 points to gain for Lyngby, Skovbakken or Frederiksberg. 8 points will bring Lyngby to a total of 20 points, which I don't think will be enough. In other words, we have to find points against top3 AND win all games against bottom 5. Unrealistic is the word, and that is why we on our team, has agreed to play one game for that games sake. Which actually just might make us better - who knows!!

When 3 became 2...

Mikkel has withdrawn himself from our guessing competition, which pretty much seals the deal.
I think my biggest wonderment in this whole thing is - "when the f... did this competition become more then judt fun??"
I did this thing because it is nice to hear other peoples opinion on the coming weekends games, and now one of the most informative ones will stop... Sad for me and everyone who was following the league.

Either way, I will continuously write down my thoughts and guesses, and I will keep the score against William - BECAUSE HE IS THE GUY I WANT TO BEAT...:0)

Thoughts ond the coming round...

First the standings between mr. William and I.

William managed to scrape together 1[read: ONE] point in last round which brings him to a total of 5 points.
I managed to get the DHG game right and that brought me to a roundscore of 4 points. My total is 11 points.
--- "William.. I just raised the bar, come join me up here" ...

And now to the guesses:

Broendby vs. Fortuna
I am leaning towards a home victory because Fortuna just had a hard tournament, which is almost always hard to bounds back from right away, and because the homecourt is SO HORRIBLE for vissitors, that this match is a one way action.
Result: 3 - 1

Lyngby vs. Holte
Hehe... These points are safe and sure!! I am actually not doubting for one second that we will win tonights match. We will be wanting it more, and i believe we as a team has what it takes to challenge the leaders and newly crowned cup champions.
If our serves and blocks are not working, Holte will finish this match in 35 minutes 0 - 3, but if we can get our game going there will be hell to pay. The difference for us from now on is, we will be looking to grap those chances to win games, there is nothing more to lose!!
You might call us Lyngby Lions from now on... And rather bring 5 Lions, than 500 sheep...:0)
Result: 3 - 1

DHG vs. Fortuna
Looking to steal some points on William, I will guess this match to be a 4games match. Home team is getting sharper and sharper in serves and figthing for balls, so I am expecting them to win a game in this match.
Result: 1 - 3

Like I began this article with, we are at a point in Lyngby now, where there is really no more to lose this season, and we will try to use that in the way we play each and every game..

Good luck to everyone this coming weekend, except Holte tonight.. :0)

"I will never miss a sunset or a rainbow because I am looking down" ... Sara June Parker

Skovbakken vs. Broendby
I actually think Skovbakken played a pretty steady game against us this weekend, but that wont be enough against Broendby. Pia is back on track and the young players keep getting better and better. This will be a victory on the road for Broendby.
Result: 1 - 3

KSV vs. Frederiksberg
Well I think William will be guessing 0 - 3 on this one, so again I am taking my chance to get some points on him. There is no doubt though, that Frederiksberg will win this game.
Result: 1 - 3

Drama uden lige i Holte

Stikordsliste:

- En Brøndbyfan i ordets fulde betydning
- Polititianmeldelse

Skovbakken - KSV 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-0
Lyngby - DHG 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-1
Holte - Brøndby 3-1 ... Resultatet blev 3-2
Fortuna - Frederiksberg 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-1

Mikkel fik således 6 point

William tippede således:
Skovbakken - KSV 3-1 ... Resultatet blev 3-0
Lyngby - DHG Odense 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-1
Holte - Brøndby VK 3-1 ... Resultatet blev 3-2
Fortuna - Frederiksberg 1-3 ... Resultatet blev 3-1

William fik således 3 point

Mini tippede således:
Skovbakken - KSV 2-3 ... Resultatet blev 3-0
Lyngby - DHG Odense 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-1
Holte - Brøndby VK 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-2
Fortuna - Frederiksberg 3-0 ... Resultatet blev 3-1

Mini fik således 3 point

Samlede stilling:
Mikkel 6 point
Mini 3 point
Willy 3 point

Mine bud på næste runde(kun 2 kampe)

Frederiksberg vs. Holte

Resultat: 2 - 3 - jeg vil jo gerne have fred i hjemmet trods alt.. ;0)

Fortuna vs. Frederiksberg

Resultat: 2 – 3
